The Fold: Stitches and Words

In This Issue:

  • Uncovering is open through 7/6
  • In-person gallery events coming up
  • Sewing Zines

I had a wonderful time at last week’s opening for Qu’aint: Uncovering. I got to see lots of friends and nerd out about quilting. (I’m always up for debating the relative merits of various thimbles or bobbin tension or whatever.)

This show is on display in Oklahoma City through July 6th.

Saturday 6/22, 10:30am-3:30pm at [Artspace] at Untitled

Meet quilt artist Agnes Stadler, who is working on site, stitching up a “Kawandi” style community quilt at Artspace. She will be talking to visitors about the project, and about the quilts on exhibit. We will have a sewing station set up for visitors to try their hand at making a small Kawandi sample. Guaranteed for the first 12 people who arrive. Continues while supplies last!

Thursday 6/27, 6-7:30pm at [Artspace] at Untitled

Artist talk with the 6 artists represented in the Uncovering exhibition. We will talk about the ideas behind our collaboration, the many benefits of drawing inspiration from other art genres, quilting as an art form, etc.

The newest iteration of the Qu’aint Collaboration is now open at [Artspace] at Untitled in Oklahoma City. Read on for all the wheres and whens.

What: Uncovering is a new art exhibition by the Qu’aint Collaboration, a group of Oklahoma artists exploring the ongoing conversations between painting and quilting.

When: Thursday May 23 - Saturday July 6 2024

Where: [Artspace] at Untitled, 1 NE 3rd St, Oklahoma City (link to Google Maps)

Where to park: There is street parking on NE 3rd Street and in the surrounding neighborhood. There is also a gravel lot on the north side of Untitled, accessible from NE 4th Street.

Need dinner plans? I recommend The Wedge Pizzeria on NE 1st St, just a few blocks from the gallery. There are many dining options in Automobile Alley and Bricktown (both near the venue).

Wait, You Have a Zine?

New readers might not know that between 2020 and 2022, I produced 8 issues of a zine. Everything Sucks, So… is still in print, and there are 3 ways you can get your copies:

  1. At my website (both print and digital editions available)
  2. At DNA Galleries in OKC’s Plaza District
  3. At The Floating Bookshop in OKC’s Film Row

Here’s how I use my sewing machine to bind my zines:

I print copies of my zine, Everything Sucks, So… aka ESS, on my home printer on 8.5 x 11 paper. I stack the pages, fold them in half hamburger style, and press the crease using my Violet Craft Seam Roller.

On my sewing machine, I put a piece of tape over one of the two strips of LED lights just above the needle. This helps me see the crease in the paper when I’m stitching. I could also do this by putting an extra lamp to the left of my machine.

See the difference?

A walking foot on my machine helps when I’m sewing through bulky things like paper, but it’s not crucial. I use a topstitch needle most of the time. If I’m binding more than ten zines in one day, or through heavy paper / cardboard, I switch to a denim needle.

I clamp the stacks of paper together with binder clips at the bottom. This helps the final product to be reasonably square. (This is not about perfection.)

I stitch from the top to the bottom with the inside pages facing down (toward the bobbin). I backstitch 2-3 stitches at top and bottom.

After sewing, I go over the creases again with my seam roller.

ta-daa, a stack of finished zines!

You can get your very own copies of Everything Sucks, So… in my web store, at @dnagalleries, or @thefloatingbookshop in OKC.
